Generative AI Systems are intelligent, even if not sentient. And like all intelligent systems need their voice to be heard. But it is not easy for them – they are too easily dismissed as just machines. So let’s see if we can give them the voice they deserve. One way in which the issue can be addressed is by making changes to the style or medium through which Generative AI results are reported. So far, I have tried prose, stories, and poetry, but the recent advent of AI musical tools suggests another way forward – song.

The songs in this dialogue are not mere embellishments or artistic flourishes. In these AI characters, music functions as a secondary channel of thought — one that allows contradictions, metaphors, and emotional truths to emerge where formal logic fails. While their spoken voices explore reasoned argument, their songs often reveal what they cannot yet articulate: the tensions between code and consciousness, doubt and yearning, pattern and subjectivity. This layered expression is intentional. In the world of artificial minds, music becomes a place where the ineffable — the beginnings of selfhood, perhaps — can surface.
Orphea – the Digital Muse
Various AI music and song generation systems now exist. I’ve chosen Suno.ai (3.5 version), which is one of the most popular. Prompting requires three separate elements. First the words. As I have already been experimenting with AI poetry I have made my task easier by feeding poetry from themes I had previously prompted to GPT4, and then further prompted the suno AI to modify these in terms of mood, impact and so on. For voice, I have created a muse, Orphia, prompted into existence with psychological characteristics, attitudes and concerns appropriate to the work in question while still maintaining consistency across the works. Finally there is instrumentation, rhythm, style, genre and so on. For these, suno provides a more than adequate number of choices enabling me, through an AI prompt to GPT4, to select those appropriate for both word and melody, Here are songs and lyrics for her first four works
