Orpheus Team Potential Questionnaire
John Rust was approached by GetFeedBack with a request to jointly develop a team building version of his Orpheus Business Personality Inventory (OBPI).
The Orpheus TPQ profile is based on the Integrity sub-scales of the OBPI. These are derived from the theory that human character develops through a series of choices that we make throughout our lives. These choices lay down habitual styles of responding that become increasingly ingrained as we mature. It is these habitual ways of responding that translate into personal strengths and weaknesses.
The Orpheus TPQ combines individual scores to reflect the impact of these when individuals form a team for the purposes of work, play or competition. These habitual styles translate into the operating practices that give each team its own characteristic identity and modus operandi. Changing just one member of the team can change the preferred style of operating and the relative strengths and weaknesses of the whole team. By understanding these strengths and weaknesses a team can unlock its true potential, build on its collective strengths and manage its collective weaknesses.
The Orpheus TPQ profile
The profile provides feedback on seven dimensions that combine to give a team its relative strengths and weaknesses.
- Proficiency – care in detailed tasks, versus a trial and error approach
- Work Orientation – belief in hard work, versus a belief in work-life balance
- Patience – calm and patience, versus competitive aggression
- Fair-mindedness – a rational approach, versus an emotional approach
- Loyalty – a desire to follow, versus a desire to lead
- Disclosure – being truly open, versus ‘playing one’s cards close to one’s chest’
- Initiative – enjoyment of rapid change, versus the valuing of tradition
The Orpheus Team Profile Questionnaire (TPQ) serves as a crucial instrument within the realm of psychometric assessments, particularly due to its ability to provide comprehensive insights into the distribution of attributes within a team. This functionality is not only innovative but immensely practical, helping organizations optimize team dynamics and performance through strategic HR interventions and internal team discussions.
Team Dynamics
One of the key functionalities of the Orpheus TPQ is its capacity to identify overrepresented and underrepresented attributes within a team. This insight is critical because imbalances can significantly impact team functionality and harmony. For instance, when a particular trait such as Proficiency is overrepresented, it may lead to internal competition among team members who excel in this area. This competition can be disruptive, as team members might struggle to assert their dominance in shared areas of strength, potentially leading to conflict and inefficiency.
Conversely, underrepresentation of crucial traits can pose significant challenges as well. If a team lacks adequate numbers of members who are strong in certain competencies, such as Initiative or Work Orientation, other team members may be forced to step out of their comfort zones and handle tasks that do not align with their strengths. This can lead to stress, decreased job satisfaction, and a decline in performance as team members grapple with roles they are less equipped to handle.
Recognizing these dynamics, the Orpheus TPQ offers invaluable guidance for HR departments and team leaders. With detailed insights into the attribute landscape of a team, HR can make informed decisions about recruitment, team restructuring, or professional development. For example, if the TPQ reveals an underrepresentation in Fair-mindedness, the HR department might look to recruit individuals who excel in rational and impartial decision-making. Alternatively, they could provide existing team members with training to develop this trait, enhancing the overall balance within the team.
Additionally, teams that are aware of their collective profile through the Orpheus TPQ can engage in constructive discussions about how their strengths and weaknesses impact their work together. Such insights enable team members to understand the roots of certain team dynamics, fostering a more empathetic and collaborative environment. Teams can strategize on how best to utilize their strengths and address areas where they are weak, which can lead to improved performance and more effective team collaboration.
Team Development
Moreover, the Orpheus TPQ is particularly valuable in strategic planning and team development initiatives. It allows team leaders to align team capabilities with organizational goals and projects, ensuring that the right mix of skills and traits are available for critical tasks and challenges. This strategic alignment is essential for enhancing team effectiveness and achieving high performance.
In essence, the Orpheus TPQ is not merely a tool for assessing individual and team traits but a strategic instrument that facilitates optimal team composition and function. Its ability to pinpoint attribute imbalances provides actionable insights that can transform an organization’s approach to team management and development, ultimately leading to more cohesive and productive teams. This innovative functionality of the Orpheus TPQ underscores its groundbreaking impact on the field of psychometrics and its ongoing influence on the future of organizational development.
