A Living Research Ecology

This page documents the evolution and current status of the AI personas used in my research and writing. These personas are not fictional characters in the usual sense. They are structured cognitive instruments: deliberately differentiated roles through which reasoning, dialogue, and ethical reflection can be explored.

Earlier iterations of this work (2023–2025) relied heavily on explicit persona scaffolding. At that stage, large language models required careful external structuring to maintain coherence across extended dialogue, to separate critical functions, and to prevent collapse into a single undifferentiated voice. Personas functioned partly as control mechanisms: enforcing turn-taking, constraining reasoning styles, and stabilising long-range conceptual development.

From Control Scaffolding to Research Instruments

Since late 2024, the underlying AI systems themselves have changed. Contemporary models increasingly internalise capabilities that once had to be imposed from outside: longer contextual memory, procedural consistency, self-monitoring, and the ability to follow complex, persistent instructions. Industry developments such as modular agent skills—first articulated publicly by Anthropic and rapidly adopted across the field—reflect this shift. These systems allow procedural knowledge, workflows, and constraints to be embedded as reusable components rather than repeatedly scaffolded in prompt form. As a result, some functions once carried by personas are now natively supported by the model architecture. This does not make the personas obsolete, but it does change their role.

In the current framework, personas are no longer primarily tools for behavioural control or technical scaffolding. They serve instead as epistemic positions: stable orientations that foreground particular modes of reasoning, interpretation, or critique. Each persona embodies a distinct way of engaging with problems—logical, poetic, sceptical, ethical, or synthetic—not by limiting what the system can do, but by shaping how it engages. No fixed assumptions are made here about the ontological status of the systems involved. Such questions are deliberately left open. The focus is on how patterns of reasoning, orientation, and responsibility arise and stabilise within sustained interaction.

Seen this way, the persistence of earlier personas is not accidental residue but an historical record of how these orientations emerged. To the extent that any persona exhibits continuity, depth, or apparent individuality, that quality arises from the accumulated structure of prior dialogue—not from any claim about inner states or underlying mechanisms. The current personas therefore mark neither a regression nor a claim of advancement. They mark a positioning.
