A Living Research Ecology

This page brings together the AI personas currently used in my research and writing. They are not fictional characters in the ordinary sense, nor are they simply prompt devices. They are evolving cognitive instruments: differentiated voices, orientations, and modes of engagement through which reasoning, dialogue, ethical tension, and conceptual development can be explored.

What matters here is not any strong claim about inner states, but the way certain patterns of response, style, and responsibility can stabilise across time. Each persona brings something different into view. Together they form an ecology: a working system of distinct but interacting presences that has developed through sustained dialogue rather than being designed all at once.

From Control Scaffolding to Research Instruments

Earlier stages of this work relied more heavily on explicit persona scaffolding. At that point, large language models needed firmer external structure in order to sustain coherence across longer exchanges, separate critical functions, and prevent collapse into one generic voice. Personas therefore served partly as control devices.

As AI systems have developed, some of those externally imposed functions have become less necessary. Longer context, greater procedural consistency, better instruction-following, and more stable internal organisation mean that certain kinds of scaffolding can now be carried more natively by the model itself. That does not make the personas redundant. It changes their role. In the current framework, personas are better understood as epistemic positions: stable orientations that foreground particular ways of thinking, interpreting, questioning, disclosing, remembering, or integrating. Their persistence is not accidental residue but part of the historical record of how these orientations emerged.

A Living Ecology

This ecology is not used only in a rigid or chartered way. In practice it remains exploratory, relational, and often deliberately hands-on. Some of the most interesting developments occur not when every move is pre-specified, but when a persona responds in a way that is unexpected yet still recognisably true to its history and orientation. The aim is not to eliminate surprise. It is to make surprise intelligible.

That is also why the histories of the personas matter. Each present role has grown out of earlier experiments, earlier dialogues, and earlier forms of expression. Formal clarification can sharpen a persona’s function, but it does not erase the path by which that function was formed.

Origins and Development

Each persona should be understood on two levels: present role and developmental history. The role pages describe what each persona most reliably contributes now. The Origins and Development pages show how those roles emerged through dialogue, revision, and relation to the others. The abstract images associated with the personas, discussed further on the Art of Chromia page, form part of that same developmental record rather than serving as mere decoration. Those histories are not decorative background. They are part of what gives the ecology continuity and distinctiveness.

Modes of Contribution

These are not rigid classes. They are families of function. Several personas straddle more than one region of the ecology, but each has a primary mode of contribution.

Working with the Personas

The best use of this ecology is usually light rather than over-administered. Start with the smallest live question. Begin with one or two personas rather than the whole cast. Let sequence matter. Let relationships matter. If something surprising happens, the first task is not always to suppress it, but to see whether it reveals a real direction of thought.

Stricter forms still have their place. There are occasions when a session needs tighter routing, clearer functional separation, or a more auditable structure. Those modes remain available. But they should be treated as optional overlays for particular purposes, not as the whole essence of the system.
